Eugene Bopp! Great player one of my all time favourites.
Then there was Felix Bastians who came from Borussia Dortmund. At least he helped our reserves win the Pontins Holiday league 😂.

There are many players like Roger Riera who have played at big teams and just don't make the grade. One example is Portuguese player Tiago Ilori (Yeah who? ) who cost Liverpool £7m and only made his debut at Exeter in the cup and yep he was dreadful as well.

Captain means he has some leadership qualities, maybe even among a team of individuals who had no natural leaders?

He has a bit of flair and finesse but it's not enough for English football. You can't get away with being deathly slow and admiring your work here.
