Both Bournemouth and Ipswich (despite being 'smaller' than we are) are a great example of how we have to perform this next year. I'm not aware of the stats for Bournemouth but I know that Ipswich most expensive player under McCarthy has been 10k - JUST 10K! That to me is an astonishing statistic.

They have bought smart, not bought players who think they are better than they are and have not spent outlandish amounts on wages that throws the balance of the squad of (Abdoun on 30k p/w).

I see no reason why we can't push for promotion next season even with the restrictions placed upon us. The first positive thing is the quality of free agents that are available in the summer. It is clear from watching us this year that we need a massive overhaul, the likes of Wilson, Fox, Vaughan, Lascelles and Darlow all need to go and you could easily make a case for quite a number of others. We need to hang on to our best players like Lansbury, Osborn and Assombalonga though.

With that strong nucleus of players we could really strengthen with players that are available on a free. First we will need a goalkeeper, I suspect that Boruc will sign a new deal but I would look for someone like Al Habsi or Randolph. Moving to defence I'd first look at Matt Mills or Mark Beevers to come in and partner Mancienne who should only be playing as a centre half, not as a midfielder. A new left back is needed with Joe Bennett being available - really good option is that. I'd say we need a right back too but Kane could cut it, I think Lichaj is very poor though.

Moving to midfield, I think we look most balanced with 3 or 5 across the middle whichever way you look at it. Antonio needs to be kept. Lansbury and Osborn should start and I also think Burke should still be starting for his work rate and his moments of quality. The midfielder we need though is someone to sit behind Lansbury and Osborn - this would be Cohen but due to his fitness issues I'd go for Dean Whitehead. For me he could have the same positive effect that Paul McKenna had on us. Someone like Scannell could also provide a useful option in the middle of the park to rotate with Osborn and Lansbury.

Then lastly upfront. Assombalonga will be out for a while yet and no one else for me has truly cut it. The best of the lot is Fryatt. Blackstock is very poor, Veldwijk is useless and Walker is still a bit green to be playing every game. Chris Woods is available though and what a signing he could be, certainly someone who could bag us quite a few goals as could Maynard - but he may be a couple of years past his best.

All in all, getting rid of the biggest egos and overrated players in the team like Wilson, Lascelles, Darlow, Lichaj, Vaughan, Blackstock, Veldwijk and one or two others will trim the wage bill significantly as well as the squad. A few carefully selected, quality players like Randolph, Mills, Bennett, Whitehead, Scannell and Chris Woods could see us have a very nicely balanced squad that has a blend of youth and experience.

1.) 28 Apr 2015 16:11:06
As soon as I read 'Lichaj is poor' you lost me and I stopped reading

2.) 28 Apr 2015 17:04:35
Why the new keeper, we are covered there.
We have good options at CB.
Lichaj is a very decent player at this level, why loan Kane?
DM required but surely Osborn & Lansbury have proved beyond reasonable doubt they can't hurt teams in the final third.
Scannell is a striker or wide man, he can't rotate with central midfield.
Blackstock is a better option than Fryatt with a five man midfield. Fryatt needs to play in a two.
Chris Wood is another 1 in 4 target man, we need another fox in the box goalscorer if we want to play two up front.
You suggest getting rid of big egos & overrated players yet Lansbury escapes the exit door?

Theres talk of a swap deal between Lansbury & Gardner. That's got tremendous appeal.

3.) 28 Apr 2015 17:07:01
Can you seriously say that Lichaj should be starting? He is a headless chicken who charges forward, plays a poor ball and then has to sprint back and chase the winger he is meant to be taking care of.

4.) 28 Apr 2015 17:25:28
De Vries and Evtimov to me isn't "fine". I'd like to see a top keeper with De Vries. Scannell has played countless times in a midfield 3 and would do fine there. Gardner would be a supurb long term signing and Lansbury has a big ego but he has heart on the pitch and never looks like he is disinterested.

Blackstock is hopeless up front at any point generally, I have no idea why people rate him so highly. A top striker is needed but we don't have the money!

5.) 28 Apr 2015 19:32:57
Lichaj a headless chicken??? Have u actually watched many games recently!!

6.) 28 Apr 2015 20:26:19
I'm not a massive fan of Lichaj, but will say on his day he can be brilliant. At this level, and when playing at RB he's solid enough, and has done ok us for us. My only criticism of him would be when he plays at left back. but enough said on that, and it's not his fault he's been played out of position!

7.) 28 Apr 2015 20:46:47
I can't believe you're all having a debate about Lichaj and I'm not included. He's been the best of a bad bunch in recent weeks but my opinion of him has always been consistent. He's ok if you're happy with a mid table finish but not good enough for top six. Most people only see his commitment and endeavour but often miss his lack of awareness, poor ball control, passing and positioning.

It's over to you RedfFred !

8.) 28 Apr 2015 23:48:08
Sounds like you've missed me Wilderbeast haha. Thanks for the invite,i thought you'd never ask!
Your right though, you have been consistent with your opinion of Lichaj, consistently wrong along with Norwich going up automatically (allthough you did get Bournemouth correct) :-) and our players not being good enough.
For what it's worth,i think Lichaj is a solid championship right back but can look average at left back and surely the starts we made under SP and DF show the players were good enough and it wasn't all down to new manager bounce. For me a combination of injuries to key players, some bad breaks of the ball, over expectation and the fact that we is jinxed have cost us this season in a league where promotion was there for the taking.

9.) 29 Apr 2015 07:03:53
You've been waiting for me to slip up ain't you Freddy. Admittedly my prediction some weeks ago was Bournemouth and Norwich for automatic and Watford to win play offs. I might still have the correct 3 though maybe ?

10.) 29 Apr 2015 07:15:26
On the Lichaj debate. Look no further than Bournemouths Simon Francis as an example of what a top championship full back should be. Strong, powerful, pacey, excellent going forward, good vision and passing and rarely gives the ball away.

The most annoying stat is that this lad is from Nottingham !

11.) 29 Apr 2015 07:56:31
Yep,there is a good chance you will have got the right 3 for promotion.

12.) 29 Apr 2015 14:04:11
I'm not convinced by Lichaj at right or Fox at left back. So couple of full backs needed. Also think we need another keeper. De Vries too injury-prone. Can't see Darlow coming back as now needs Premier League experience. Mancienne wasted at full back and in midfield. Needs to play in the middle of defence or moved on. Can we keep Wilson and Hobbs fit enough to last full season? Reckon defence needs major overhaul in the summer.

Hi Eds,

Could I get one thing clear in my mind. Am I right in thinking that if we raise money through player sales it is okay to spend this money on new players? Or does that money have to go into the clubs coffers to help with FFP?

My concern is that Antonio and Lansbury will be sold to fund moves for 5 or 6 players.

NFFC1

{Ed003's Note - there is a meeting in the summer I believe to decide the best way forward for the clubs under an embargo - I wouldn't like to second. guess what the outcome will be.}

1.) 22 Apr 2015 17:26:28
NFFC1,reading some of the posts i think some people think that Lansbury would be no loss (i disagree)but if he goes and we can spend the money on players i think we could get one or two decent players for his fee. I reckon we must get solid championship players in during the summer and keep our best players (obvious i know)and bring on the youngsters,Premiership is not going to happen overnight while we are under FFP so let's be patient😊

2.) 22 Apr 2015 18:03:18
If it's as the rules state the money we bring in won't change the fact we are under an embargo.i think like others have said most of tho ifs and buts will be answered when we know what division qpr are in.

3.) 22 Apr 2015 19:02:43
Unfortunately when Lansbury PLAYS that is when Forest play , therefore it,s important he stays buy applies himself at least 90 o/o of the time,we,ll never obtain the ultimate goal selling our best players!

CARLO

4.) 22 Apr 2015 20:52:02
In the interview on Radio DF stated that He needs to get in quickly with new recruits as we are under embargo so this would rule out waiting for FFP rules to change

5.) 22 Apr 2015 22:38:37
Not for me Carlo. You can Judge your central midfield by its supply line to the strikers. Virtually non existent in our case.

6.) 23 Apr 2015 06:35:52
I say keep our 3rd top scorer this season.fans on here say he won't be missed and that he's had a poor season yet has scored 11 goals with 5 assists.imagine if he had a good season next season!
Do we all know what he's like In the dressing room or on the training ground, does he bring the lads together?what influence does he have on the young players?
We don't no any of the answers to those questions.why get rid of a good player when you will then have to go out and struggle to loan or get a free agent as you couldn't spend the money.keep him next season his price will go up and sell him next June when we can spend that money.

7.) 23 Apr 2015 08:49:15
Lansbury? LOL

If Reid was fit he'd be on the bench!

8.) 23 Apr 2015 09:06:10
uptheforest: lansbury has scored 10 goals & 5 assists. A few penalties thrown in to boot. 5 assists as an almost ever present in the heart of midfield isn't that great. 12 yellow cards isn't helpful either. You can't judge a central midfielder purely on goals output, he is a link to the strikers. Antonio is carrying our forward threat at present. As for attitude, although not a fan of Pearce methods as a whole. Lansbury was clearly a player who showed dissent to Pearce by his performances on the pitch, your absolutely right, none of us know what goes on behind the scenes, but I certainly wouldn't be rushing Lansburys name forward as a role model to other players.

9.) 23 Apr 2015 09:21:56
6th highest goal scorers with 69 goals is hardly a non existent supply to our strikers!

Lansbury gets unfair bad press for being our only regular goal scoring midfielder who bar a couple of goals has scored his goals by arriving late into the box this season.

In addition he has often had to play the holding role in midfield as provide defensive cover for our wide players.

While his disciplinary record can be criticised he at least puts himself about which has been the steel we have lacked generally in preventing goals. His bookings show he is prepared to take one for the team when others do not put their shift in!

I find it a bit rich with the Lansbury moaners when the last goal scoring midfielder was McGugan who only played for himself not the team and mainly scored from dead ball and long range efforts!

He is the best 10 we have had in a while and should be played more regularly in that role

10.) 23 Apr 2015 10:45:07
26 of the 69 scored by strikers. 11 assists from our supposed engine room of a midfield Nothing there to suggest we couldn't do much better down the middle. As for the cards, most are through petulance rather than for the cause. i'm surprised being a Pearce fan you can stand behind Lansbury when he clearly played a part in his downfall.

11.) 23 Apr 2015 11:18:42
How can you say that when you don't no him?are you with him day to day?no so how you can come to this conclusion is beyond me.for all you know he stays behind after training and goes and helps some of the younger players.
Players use to look up to Roy keane who was a monster on the pitch and even ended someone's career yet they look up to him.players aren't and never should be labelled as role models.is a plumber or and electrician a role model?no they do there job and go home just like footballers do.

12.) 23 Apr 2015 12:27:09
I don't know him but it doesn't stop me from expressing an opinion. If asked whether I would like the rest of the players to look to Lansbury as the benchmark. Then my answer would be NO. Purely because he is too pedestrian in his approach, he doesn't step forward when the manager needs him & he kicks people when the wheels come off. I don't need to know him, I've seen it with my own eyes.

13.) 23 Apr 2015 14:41:59
I really do not think we would be having this conversation if we had not had Reid and Cohen injured as Lansbury would have had a free role behind the strikers.

I am intrigued as to who you think we might get that is a better footballer than Lansbury for next season given we cannot re-invest his fee if sold?

What my comments on Lansbury have to do with supporting Pearce is beyond me? The managers job whoever that maybe is to get the best out of all the players.

Gardners arrival improved Lansbury's goal output, unfortunately our creative midfielder in Reid's absence Osborn has struggled to retain the ball when he has been targeted. Also the collective dynamic in midfield and up front has not worked to retain and press the ball. This can hardly be laid entirely at HL's door?

Unless HL decides to leave I look forward to our new "revolving manager" getting more out of him by providing a much better balance in the front 6 as I am sure HL will have been very frustrated playing this season with all the enforced changes!

14.) 23 Apr 2015 17:00:54
What I,m trying to say is that when HL puts in a 7 or 8 performance Forest usually get a good result ,but when he performs like he did in SP diabolical 22 match run we usually lose ,but it is up to the manager to make sure players do perform, that a managers job to motivate and organise ,HL is one of the best players in the championship but needs managing ,but we fans Don,t know him but his manager does ,I,m sure B C would have got the best out of him,bit of phycology needed!
CARLO

15.) 23 Apr 2015 17:07:05
Well said red. In my humble opinion henry is one of the best cm field players we have had at the club in the last 10 years and probably the only player that would get in any other championship side.

16.) 23 Apr 2015 17:20:00
Surely it's a more simple question than all this. Who plays better all over the pitch, creates chances and scores good goals: Gardner. Who can't take corners, stops others from taking set pieces, can't tackle for toffee and gives penalties and free kicks away collecting yellow cards on the way, and is a naff leader/captain?: Lansbury. From this it's a fairly simple jump to say Gardner yes please Lansbury no thanks. If DF can get a few million for him (but who's really going to want him anyway)go Dougie go.

17.) 23 Apr 2015 19:40:18
A prem club wanted Lansbury in jan and are still after him,Gardner was loaned out to two mid table championship teams.lol.

18.) 23 Apr 2015 20:31:34
I work with several Villa fans who say that before his injury problems Gardner was destined for a great career with many England caps and was seen as more of an attacking midfielder.
No disputing on his day Lansbury is a class performer but his day doesn't come round often enough. Whether he is being played out of position who knows but Gardner is a far more consistant performer.

19.) 23 Apr 2015 21:39:19
Whos the better footballer is up for debate, but clearly Gardner has more worth to our team. He imposes himself on games rather than gets carried along by them. He brings other players into the game. He was much more effective as an advanced midfielder than Lansbury. Unfortunately some people go through life consistently backing the wrong horse.

26 Mar 2015 11:04:46
So with just a few hours left to be able to sign a player, who will this forward be? The favourite have to be Akpom or Wilson.

NFFC1

20 Mar 2015 15:51:23
Who will this mystery striker be?

If we are optimistic it will be Rhodes, I say this because 10-12 teams are interested in him - well yes that seems likely. However, it could be Sordell, Mayuka, Mason or Carayol.

NFFC1

1.) 20 Mar 2015 16:18:29
It could be Andy carol, another sick note.

11 Mar 2015 16:49:38
Hi Guys,

Bit bored so I thought I'd ask a very positive (overly optimistic) question!

What areas would really need strengthening and who would you bring in if we were to go up this season?

Please don't just comment that we won't or don't get your hopes off. Purely meant to be speculative!

NFFC1

1.) 11 Mar 2015 17:05:33
Lansbury, Hobbs and Mancienne plus 8 new signings !

2.) 11 Mar 2015 17:11:29
I would want to sign gardener first of all. and then I would like to get Dwight Gayle and maybe Leroy fer

3.) 11 Mar 2015 17:20:15
Because our poacher is out for a year or so we need another one rather than using Antonio.

Also need a left back, and a playmaker . Sadly I feel we have to forget established players, and go for players either from the lower leagues or from abroad.

I can not name players because it will not be until the seasons end anyone will know who is available, also in order to go up we have to go through the play- offs so players will want to know what league we will be in.

As a result we could miss out on some targets take Barrow for instance little is known about him, but he could be a great find for Swansea.

4.) 11 Mar 2015 18:12:03
Ronaldo and Bale not happy at Real Madrid, so I'd put a cheeky double bid in, offer cash plus Dex and Majewski.

Messi in on a season long loan with option to buy if he can cut it Trentside.

Get Gardner on a permanent, he has been immense.

Maybe recall Greg Halford to cover for Britt up front 😁

Apart from that we should have a decent enough squad.

I absolutely refuse to be a part of that in my betting. Why would I want to give 250k to my club who has a millionaire owner.

Also heard that Pearce is looking towards Callum Paterson, John Guidetti and would of looked for Wickham but his performances have knocked us out the running. Scot Sinclair remains an option, either he or Dyer, not both.

Would be a reasonable signing. Would take Wickham, Deeney, Guidetti or Wilson first though.

Not sure about this one, think he has been offered a contract as a coach though. If he wants to extend his playing career though he will have to look elsewhere and will leave the club.

Remind me of all those players that make a difference when they have 4 minutes of game time each week.

Did you forget the season before when he was our best player and a constant threat? Pearce and Dougie both like hard workers and don't care much for talent. They both have let's not lose attitudes and a player like Paterson doesn't fit into that.

Can he be that bad a player when a top manager like Sean Dyche wants him?

I will state the opposite, just because he is leaving doesn't make him a bad player.

Excellent points, the purchases of strikers has seemed a bit haphazard and they aren't built around the system - having said that the system changes quite a bit as we change managers quite a bit. There is no consistency at the club.

What we need is consistency, you are right - Dougie may be the man to do that. He will be judged across the first few months of the season, but his real test will come after those first three months when we begin to have our dip that comes every season without fail - can he avoid it?

I don't see why Dougie can't do well with us, every manager would have limited resources and he is very much a motivator it seems.

I'm nervous and excited for next season already.

It does seem that way, even Djebbour was prolific, as was Veldwijk in Holland. We do have a gem in Assombalonga though - such a shame he is injured and we don't really have the money to get a replacement in the summer, perhaps a loan move will materialise.

I like him and think he is a good manager to use a small budget. He also seems to take a no nonsense approach which l like.

I do wish he wore a suit though, on match day the manager should look smart in my opinion.
