Anyone have any thoughts on goalkeeper positioning. The Sheff Utd GK positioning for the free kick last night left him in no mans land and the ball ended up in the top corner. Like a lot of similar free kicks it made the scorer look good but if the keeper had been stood on his line I reckon he would have got to it. I also reckon the scorer would have attempted the kick irrespective of where the GK was standing. What I mean is he did not think he's off his line so I'll put it there. Our 2 keepers also stand well off the goal line on various occasions, in open play and at free kicks and I can understand the plan is to cover more ground but to my mind standing so far off the goal line leaves them vulnerable. Is this the way they are coached?

1.) The keeper is 5yds off his line for 2 reasons: To anticipate a cross & narrow the angle. No issue with his positioning.

What follows is difficult to comprehend, I think the keeper assumes its going wide & watches it go in the net.
Terrible goalkeeping but if it puts Nigel Clough out the Capital one cup then itll do for me.

Playing off your line in open play is relatively common sense as it provides the defence with an extra man, i.e pass backs. Also gives a chance to 'sweep' up any through balls without being too deep in the first place. Being off your line in free kick positions I can only assume is a coaching thing and each will have their own view.

3.) If he stands on his line the goal looks bigger when he's off his line it makes the goal look smaller, therefore the kick taker thinks he has to hit it bang in the corner rather than having more goal to aim for. its pretty standard. all keepers do it.

Just seen the Fawaz statement, simple and makes sense. Good business that the 2 loanees will cost us nothing in wages.

You did not mention Abdoun, I see he's still training with the first team.

Henri has a choice, go to Burnley for a bit more money and play some PL footy for one season or remain here, get promoted and stay in the PL for the rest of his career?

V8

{Ed034's Note - one good season inside the premier league with burnley, who are not guaranteed to get relegated and he will be in the prem the rest of his career.
by signing for Burnley he has more chance of being a Prem player come this time next season, than he has by staying with us. Like it or not, that is the truth

We are waiting for 4 signings to be confirmed. Official announcement of O'Grady was premature.

Its all a bit quiet on the 3 additional players, maybe its an international clearance issue regarding 2 but what about the other from Palace. Perhaps the league sanction is taking time. I think the emergency loan window only covers a 3 month loan but surely we are not that desperate?

Its probably because they play a different system, maybe 433. At Forest we are now using 4411, its a defensive set up that would not suit Lars. He is not a hold up striker but given the chance he can obviously score goals. But we knew that before we signed him.

In the first press conference I'm sure John McGovern said it was 18 months, although I seem to remember he hesitated somewhat when pressed.

18 month contract we hear. He does sound positive about concentrating on the football side of things. Also using current members of the back room. Good start.
