I put on a post that I thought carvalho was a passenger in the Leeds game, and got thumbs down, was it just me that thought he looked lost, jumped out of 50/ 50 challenges and got shrugged off the ball too easily, u can tell he tries but is it just a case that's he's trying too hard or is he generally not good enough at the min, would like to hear what everyone else thought.

For all those reasons i agree he just lacks it for me. Got no burst of pace. Turns into trouble, has a terrible first touch. can't head a ball, always has to facing play. I could go on but i have said it all before. We could do with another matty cash.

I posted similar comments to yours arran.
There is no doubt in my mind that he is by far the best of the Portuguese trio but for me has yet to live up to his , by championship standards, huge fee.
He is a skilful player with a good touch and Grabban has benefitted from him several times but personally I think like you that he is not a great tackler, has no real pace relatively speaking and is quite easily dispossessed.
I don’t think he warrants an automatic start every week and that a spell on the bench is due. By all means use him then as an “ impact “ player when opposition sides are tiring.
At least we paid the big money for him and not Dias or Goncalves which would have been a shocking buy.
Having said all that and to contradict myself entirely he may well be right to play on Saturday at Chelsea in the cup game.

As always . .

Been saying this for ages some on here seem to think because he cost 13mill he must be good

Carvalho is talented, and quick at spotting areas of the pitch where a pass to him could be devastating. He needs more muscle on him and needs to learn how to get back (stamina)to defend and make good tackles. I too am a bit puzzled why he is always included as Osborn is a far better player doing the same things.
I think the other Portuguese players two will return to their parent clubs.
I's time for Yates and Appiah to step up to the plate and get some solid experience in this division.

I have to respectfully disagree with most of the above comments.
Having watched every game this season so far, Carvalho has been one of our most consistent performers.
At the start of the season, I felt he was trying a little too hard, his flicks weren't quite coming off, his first time balls weren't quite making their man. And then I realised, as I think the rest of the squad did, just how good he was. They weren't on his wavelength. Once they started to trust that a player like Carvalho could play first time passes around the corner, bring balls down out of the air and find his team mates at will, they began to trust him and expect this.
Now this being said, Leeds wasn't his greatest game in the Garibaldi, but after the sending off he began to find the room vacated by Phillips and therefore Forshaw and made us tick. He came deep. he dragged players out of position. He played first time balls into feet and in behind.
He may not be the most psychical, or make Antonio style runs past 3 or 4 players, but he's megged, bewildered and befuddled more players in half a season then I've seen most players do in their Forest career. He's also scored 3 and assisted 6 and created a whole host of other chances. The one thing he does that impresses me more then most others, is his ability to play the ball quickly, without taking three or four touches. This is absolutely crucial at this level, and if you look around the forest team, its a scarcity.
He's 21 and by all means is not the finished article, and may not reach the heights that 13 million may suggest but I will defend him for the pure enjoyment he has bought myself and countless other fans watching on.

Please feel free to disagree.

Up The Reds!

What I saw of him against Leeds, he gave the ball away every time, looked scared of challenges, u can only be judged on what you do on the pitch an against Leeds he was rubbish esp compared to Osborn who sometimes in games goes missing himself but he showed what he’s capable off when we needed it, great corners for the goals n his goal was brilliant, I like carvalho I think he will get better an can see a similarity with Osborn when he 1st came into team although I think carvs will be technically more gifted, just needs to learn. Good player but against Leeds poor

He played the ball that got colback our first and ran all game as did most of them.
No one stood out that much, look at lolley, very poor game from him, doesn't make him a bad player though, it was a good workmanlike performance and if pants had saved the first, which he should have, then we might have won more convincingly.
The way we play there is no one else to play the no ten and the boy is talented, for his first season as a first teamer he's done well.
At 21 and cash 21 and lolley still young we can only get better as a team.

Just occasionally you expect your most expensive player to take a game by the scruff of the neck, carvallho has never done that he plays the odd nice pass and had the odd good game, but generally he is peripheral to the action,a tidy little player but that is all and certainly not 1st on the team sheet material, time will tell who’s opinion is correct ,

I wonder if carvalho is a little down on confidence he is a decent player but he don't look as good as when I watched him in the pre season games and he seems to be scared to shoot at times is that down to coaching or the player, as for the Leeds game our midfield was pretty much nonexisten for long periods of the game I thought our best two on the pitch was Murphy and colback one thing that I didn't realise how much pace Murphy as got hoping for a good game against chelsea

Their central defender looked scared of Murphy from the kick off to me

Greg, I don’t agree but your post offers a brilliantly structured alternative view , which could just as easily be the view that becomes fact in the fullness of time. Let’s be honest both views are just opinions at the minute, only time will tell if he is worth the outlay. At the moment I think McKay was just as good as would have benefitted by being surrounded by the muscle of Colback and yacob . The whole team was a bit light weight and got bullied to much. Warburton was missing a couple of enforcers and he paid the price as players like McKay need a bit of backup.

Vulcan, check out Murphy’s goals for Ipswich on YouTube . I’d love the 29 year old Murphy - one of the best in this Division in his day. Sadly his best days are behind him now and I think he’s losing his cutting edge athleticism now(as do most 35 year olds). I still think he adds value though and always has a goal in him.

Arran I think you need to watch the game again. carvalho put a osborn type performance is,was running all over closing there defenders down making them hurry there pass up.i think you will find he out muscled pontas a couple of times and he’s suppose to be a good defender in this league.

Those comments I have seen about osborn many times, but if you actually watch carvalho or osborn properly you will see both are actually very good players, always make themselves available for a pass when it’s a tight spot for the man with the ball.

Just because he’s not taking 5 players on at a time and scoring worldies doesn’t mean he isn’t playing well that’s just not his game.

Didn't say he played the ball to Colback, just he played the ball forward for colback first.

Surely your not giving him any credit there it was straight to defender

Carvalho was the only player moving around and making himself available at times in the second half and he gave the ball away because the rest stood like statues until we went 2-1 down. Then they started to move into space.

Let's just say we disagree about calvahalo Stevie, I think he will be a very good player, it's just the fee everyone is looking at and expecting miracles from him.
21 never played first team football, he'll make all the doubters eat their words, just like cash and Osborn will.
Who would you put in the no ten role instead?

21.) 03 Jan 2019
03 Jan 2019 21:43:25
i’d play Osborn instead of carvallho never really understood the stick he gets

22.) 03 Jan 2019
03 Jan 2019 22:04:32
Ff779 by the way mate of course it’s the fee everyone’s looking at ,when your the clubs most expensive player ever people are bound to expect a bit more, what I will say is dowell was pretty effective for the 1st half of last season probably more so than carvallho TIL his form dipped as young kids do .if Jc had cost a mill or so I would have said he’s a good buy, but I think at 13 benfica saw us coming these assist stats are a red herring, didn’t need assist stats to know Robertson or gemmill or metgod could play, it’s just a boring sky sports gimmick borrowed from American sports channels,

23.) 03 Jan 2019

H3s a good player but not a no. ten.

24.) 03 Jan 2019

Stevie but AK didn't buy him, marinakis did and whoever the manager is will have to play him, just the way it goes.

25.) 03 Jan 2019
03 Jan 2019 22:50:36
Ff like you say mate we ll agree to disagree, because I don’t think Jc is a classic no 10 either,, i’m Sure your right about Ak, not having much choice over Jc ,think I’ve said my last piece on him now hope the kid turns out to be worth every penny, but the fact that this board is split over him suggests we aren’t looking at 13 mills worth of player or anything thing like it yet
