Just heard that Frank Worthington has passed. Such a pivotal man in my footballing youth. Watching and emulating him. My first match at the city ground was in 1979 when bolton were the visitors. I went primarily to watch big frank but came away a forest fan. All through the 80's i would try and get to a match where frank was playing, tranmere southampton birmingham. He was that good " Franky Wortho " my footballing hero. I will have a drink tonight.

Spot on Rutter's the first maverick, never mind about Gazza and Stan Bowles etc . Massive talent, massive personality and crowd puller. Worth the admission money alone 👍🎈.

At 5'11 he was so good in the air. Grace under pressure he was so assured in front of goal. But most of all he put smiles on faces. Ron Greenwood was at Burnden park when wortho scored that wonder goal against ipswich. I think it was his 25th of the season. The England squad was announced the next day. Frank wasnt in it. Says much about the hierarchy that spurned cloughie.

I remember as youngster marvelling at Frank's juggling warm up routine when he was at Bolton, brilliant stuff RIP Frank Worthington.

Fully agree - great player with tremendous natural ability and grace.
One of many "flair players" scandalously either overlooked altogether or barely given a chance during that very dull and conservative England era. Others whom spring to mind include the aforementioned Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh and Alan Hudson.
To some extent, this conservatism still lingers - look how long it's taken for Grealish to be involved when England's midfield has been crying out for creativity for at least the past couple of years or so.
Another great flair player of that era was Tommy Hutchison (famous for scoring "at both ends" in the 1981 FA Cup Final) . Similar to the above named players, he only managed a paltry 17 appearances for Scotland whilst our own John Robertson only managed 28.
Definitely a British phenomenon as most European/ South American international sides have always had no such reservations about regularly playing their most exciting and creative players!

Sorry can’t agree with some of this, Not going to pass an opinion on frank worthington and the moment, not the right time, but the other players Hudson, Bowles and marsh were show ponies, Bowles was a big I am in a small pond at qpr, and showed his true colours here in a proper team, walking out on the chance to play in a European cup final, Hudson was so good he moved from Chelsea to the mighty stoke city, , marsh ditto the Bowles comment, he moved to Man City and unsettled a potential championship winning side, and spent post career hanging on the coat tails of George best in a 2man show, not at any stage of his career being remotely in the same class as George, if these blokes were so good, they would have walked into an England squad probably at it’s lowest ebb in decades, just my opinion,

England have usually not liked flair players.
