So let's take stock, attacking midfielder (playmaker) - tick, winger - tick, experienced CB - tick. What else does the team REALLY need to be competitive?
An experienced GK
A LB
Another playmaker
Another winger
2xStrikers

I make that around another 20m that needs to be spent if we're going to be competitive.

GK - Pantilimon (500k - 1.5m)
LB - Clark (Free - 500k) / Potts (500k - 1.5m)
AM - Tomlin (1m - 2m)
W - Maddison (4m - 5m)
ST - Marriot (6m - 7m) / Grabban (5m - 6m)
ST - Soudani (Free)

Min spending: 10.5m / Max spending: 17m

I personally would get Pantilimon (circa 1m), Clark (Free), Maddison (circa 4.5m), Soudani (Free), Marriot (circa 6.5m). Total: 12m

GazzaRed, i should think the strikers will come to abot £15m so the other two will take it up to at least £25m, unless we get more loan players.

No doubt the club will be looking in to the European loan market, I'd expect at least 2 or 3 more to come through that channel using the connections we clearly have with some key players in that market. I fully expect Soudani to be a forest player come the start of the season. Marriot has big question marks over his head and that deal isn't looking highly likely right now. If we were that keen on him, he'd be a Forest player already. I think a lot of our activity relies on the outgoings, we need to sell big before we can buy big. The club will need a guarantee that their wage bill isn't going to be sky high next season to ensure the club is sustainable. That means the likes of Henderson, Kapino, Mancienne, Traore, Lam, McKay, Ward, Ariyabi, Bouchalakis, Grant, Murphy, Clough, Walker, Cummings, Vellios all need to be shipped out. Taking a stab at it, I'd say that's around £180,000 per week in wages (or 9.4m per year). That could be the difference between being in or out of FFP. The question is, do the players want to play football or just pick up their pay cheque. It's a tough situation as a lot of these players will have to take pay cuts and probably move down a division or move abroad if they want regular football. I'd suggest the two most likely to stick around would be Henderson and Murphy. Henderson doesn't seem to mind picking up the money and not playing and as for Murphy, well we all knew at the time what a crazy contract that was to offer. The others, we should be able to move on or likely in most cases, loan out. Big challenges for the club over the coming month or so, a big mess still to clean up.
