I've just watched the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the box. I hope that others on here did so as well. A true celebration of our great nation, combined with contributions from other nations such as Ukraine, Poland and (dare I say it) even the US.

Whilst a celebration of our nation, there was no inane flag-waving nor xenophobic songs. Just patriotism of England and Scotland and recognition of our allies. That, combined with the brilliant music and foot-drills, filled my heart with hope.

We all read the depressing stuff about mass immigration, unsustainable tax and utility bill rises etc. However, as much as sometimes I dream about relocating to Spain, tonight re-affirmed my love for this country.

I get why someone may think so Silkman, but drill is not pointless. It actually derives from the Roman Army (who weren't too shabby in their work. ) as a means of moving formations of troops around the battlefield in an 'orderly manner'. The British Army adopted this tactic centuries ago for the same reason.

At the risk of goading Stokey back onto the site, I remember reading that drill was a key factor in us beating Napoleon at Waterloo in the process of forming 'squares' of infantry to repel the French cavalry. (Stokey could explain this much more intelligently than me).

In modern-day armed forces that reason is pointless. However, drill is still taught around the world today as a means of creating discipline, cohesiveness and pride - all attributes as important today in our armed forces as they were in the past.

Bowie - I miss the field gun races as well mate. I've not seen them in years - probably banned for H&S reasons. If so, they should also ban wheelchair rugby - it's far more dangerous than field gun racing!

I know the reds come 1st on this site. But would like to give a shout out to a laddie. Only 28 yr old, lost his life at whitley Bay, Spanish city. Bank Holiday weekend, working on a ride. Too close to it. Knocks him out then crushes him. tragic. From what I read he had a cpl of kids to look after. From what I see I think it's the one that goes backwards/ forwards.
Ya know the lot of ya. I know it may bore the t1ts off some. Others have a laugh at it.
But my never take them around ya for granted, could not be more true
You really have to buckle down and appreciate your grandparents, parents etc. Just make that one step. And I promise ya, you will feel good about yourself. Just saying. Xx.

And falling out with kids, I know how stubborn they can be these days as they age. Every second goes bye is a second lost of pride most of the time. please just make the effort ? ok rant over.

My son's just gone to bed, as has his dying mother. Been trying to make sure they had a nice time at the seaside together. It's been a heart-rending experience. Every time they do something, like the beach today, I know it might be the last time she does it with him.

Every moment matters. Don't leave it until it's too late, people. Bowie is right!

Vale - I, I'm sure along with other posters on here, had no idea about your loss. I don't know when it happened and it's none of my business. All I can say is hang in there mate. I'm afraid to say that many of us on here have experienced loss - the pain fades a bit yet never really goes away does it?
