Unreal dtp, just shows your sadness. I brought up my gambling past, as a way to help people on here. Telling them there not the only ones going through it. and there's help out there. Wasn't easy to do tbh. Strange how ya keep putting me as your focus? Just keep focusing on football, you saying I don't.
Reds should be a family, share there thought's and weaknesses. As much as there strengths and loves. It's how ya learn. Giving means more than football at times.

**This is not criticism, just an observation**, the Forest V Lyon result, which was hard to find!. I think it was telling that you Stevie f let DTP have the result, rather than posting on Forest banter, and he posted it which was appreciated. It seems that the is in general, between supporters who live locally and people living in different regions, and the thing that should unite us Forest, seems to cause the problem or *Banter*.

I was thinking of your posts about the veterans and VE Day commemorations, Bowie and Lego and they reminded me that veterans haven’t always been held in high esteem for their brave service. Before WW1 they were routinely treated with contempt by the British general public. Ironically, the Vagrancy Act 1824 ( brought in to arrest thousands of demobbed sailors and soldiers after the end of the Napoleonic Wars who were injured, starving, unemployed and desperate ( and highly likely to be suffering from PTSD as yet unheard of) is still used today for the homeless ( including many ex military).
The remains of the fallen lower ranks were never repatriated ( unless you were famous and wealthy such as Nelson) and invariably buried at sea or in mass unmarked graves. It was the work of the poet Rudyard Kipling ( a world wise man of the world like you 2 chaps) on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that changed all this. Kipling himself lost his only son John Kipling in tragic circumstances at the Battle of Loos in 1915. He had been rejected by both the Army and Navy due to his very poor eyesight but Kipling Senior used his fame to pull a few strings and get him commissioned into the Irish Guards where he was killed after only a few weeks in action. His body wasnt recovered until the 1990s when some unidentified remains recovered on the battlefield were identified by DNA and re buried with full military honours. Kipling never forgave himself. Hence the lines
“If any question why we died
Tell them, because our fathers lied “

Legolas, I think the British publics attitude to the armed Forces changed for the better after WW1 and conscription, likewise post WW2 because virtually everyone had a husband, brother, father, relative, loved one etc serving. Before then the Army and Navy lower ranks were seen, probably rightly, as the **** of the Earth, press ganged from the poor of society, criminals, drunks, unemployed and even insane. They were turned into formidable fighting units by harsh discipline and relentless training by Officers from, mainly, the gentry and aristocracy. As Wellington famously said when his infantry marched past him “I don’t know what effect they will have on the French but, by God, they frighten me”! It was like the Dirty Dozen multiplied thousands of times.
The Haldane Reforms of 1906 to 1912 increased the Army’s reputation ( after the costly and messy victory in the Boer War) by creating a small but very professional Army ( but a massive Navy) backed by the Territorials, and recruited locally where possible. So the old 45th Foot became the Nottinghamshire regiment ( later amalgamated with the old 95th the Derbyshires ) into the famous Sherwood Foresters. Later still, the Pals Battalions. I mean, you’re always going to fight better alongside your mates from the same county aren’t you?
If Rudyard Kiplings poem “Tommy” was moving, have a read of Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled” written during WW1. Then if you’d lost limbs, depressingly and tragically, you were effectively written off. Personally, it breaks my heart to read it. I like to think that attitudes towards the disabled ( combined with advances in medical science, prosthetics and support) have improved beyond all recognition but please tell me if I’m wrong mate. Perhaps still a long way to go?

I'm still waiting for my legs to grow back, but in the meantime I can say that whilst people do stare at me I know there's no malice in it. I guess us humans are just interested in sights that are uncommon. Kids, particularly, are fascinated by my metal legs. Good on them I say.

The only good thing about the Afghan conflict was the advancement in prosthetic limb technology. Even on the NHS, my prosthetics are worth many thousands of pounds and work a treat for me. Anyone with the money to afford going private can access all sorts of clever AI technology built into their prosthetic limbs nowadays.

So, I agree with you Stokey. I think attitudes have changed significantly for the better.

Just rechecked your text mate, Last Kingdom is Bernard. I’ve read a few Sharpe stories which are very good and knowledgeable. I must get into the Last Kingdom stuff, a do like a historical novel.

I’ve abandoned Reacher the books temporarily but I look forward to watching the TV series.
Just read “ The Good Soldier” by Ford Madox Ford and begun “ The Marriage Portrait “ by Maggie O Farrell about the death of Lucretia D’ Medici.
I’ll go back to Rebus when I’m on me hols in about 4 weeks time.

Saint, like you, I’m absolutely besotted with the Arthurian legend. If you haven’t already read it, try TH Whites “The Once and Future King” a modern ( well 1958) version of my own favourite from 1485 Sir Thomas Mallory’s “Le Morte D’Arthur”. Just fabulous and very moving. I’m not in any way religious but the story of the healing of the wounded Hungarian knight Sir Urey by Sir Lancelot ( a miracle about a miracle) always brings me to tears. Like Lancelot himself “ And ever Lancelot wept as a child who had been beaten”.
To digress, back in the 1980s and 90s the Police Senior Command did notoriously “funky” promotion interviews to candidates with surprise questions. Mine was a gift. “ Which one of the Knights of the Round Table would you be? ”. Recovering from the shock, most people answered with the obvious and well known King Arthur ( I’d be a wise leader like him sir) or Lancelot ( a famous and unbeatable warrior who led from the front sir”. I said “ Sir Bedivere sir”
When they’d recovered ( and the panel was always a Deputy Chief Constable, a Chief Superintendent and a Superintendent) from THEIR shock they asked why.
“ Well sir, he was King Arthur’s loyal kinsman and Chief steward, present at all his battles and great events, a loyal servant and deputy to the end. As his reward he alone survived the fall of Camelot and was commanded by the King to throw Excalibur into the lake. He witnessed ( on the third attempt) the miracle of the sword being caught and taken by the Lady of the Lake under the water.
He retired to a monastery to spend his remaining days contemplating the incredible things he had witnessed and to prepare himself for meeting his Maker”
I think I got promoted because they didn’t want to admit they’d all nodded off……. 💤💤💤💤.

Just think how a minor “ trouble maker” in the obscure Roman province of Judea should end up as the Son of God and the founder of a world religion…. and the man actually existed in Roman records of his execution and life. …….

Always been fascinated with the theory of the Saxon invasion during the 2nd and 3rd centuries. A people fleeing the gathering hordes in eastern and cental Europe, Huns, Goths, Visigoths and Vandals.
The question being was it an invasion that the likes of Arthur, the Celts and Picts actually fought or was it more along the lines of a gradual migration.

From what I’ve read Saint the Saxon invasion was a medley of refugees from the hordes you mentioned, plus trading expeditions, plus family ties across the sea from the continent, plus a few settlers backed by small armed groups etc rather than a full D Day or Norman type mass invasion. Then, like the later Vikings, the sea bourne settlers would over winter, then build shelters, then villages near a freshwater river, then plant crops, even, like the Romans, intermarry with the locals then become absorbed generally, keeping a few traditions and lingual ticks from their own culture. A gradual drip drip sort of process.
I read something by Nicholas Crane the TV ( I’ll google the name of the book shortly) historian and geographer where the evidence suggests there was plenty of space for newcomers. You could walk all day through uncultivated woods and wild land without meeting anyone, just a few isolated villages. Obviously, where there was competition for resources there would be small skirmishes but nothing like the later English v Viking wars between established kingdoms or King Harold v William the Conquerer, Duke of Normandy much later.
By the way, one of the Arthurian story’s relates to a great battle in which King Arthur beats a Roman Army to cause cessation of the paying of tribute to the Roman Emperor. Perhaps your cavalryman went native?

There’s an episode of Asterix the Gaul where the eponymous hero visits his British cousins across the Channel. There’s always some gentle French humour in Asterix and in this case the fact that the Brits are under Roman occupation is because they kept knocking off for a tea break at crucial parts in the battles ……😂😂😂.

If you get time hop on the tram and get off at the embankment, walk along the river to the WFCG, for me there is no better view of it than from the side of the river.

After that drop on the canal and follow it back to the city centre - it’s a lovely walk.
