Remember the life of brian, one of the best films ever for me. Just wish they were young enough to show how the premiership works. What did the premiership ever do for us. Actually probably just in there. Hate it all. Over paid players and underpaid fans. It's a sickness. I know I know, my own opinion.

Life of Brian is my favourite comedy film by far. Brilliant satire on how blindly people follow religion and attach themselves to a false leader who 'says nice phrases' they never even said but written by different writers to be believed as said.

Just do you Silkman.
I’m not Religious however I believe in Jesus.
I don’t go to Church but I read the Bible and pray in my own terms, I guess that doesn’t make much sense to some people.
I also try to follow the Stoic Principles but now and again I fail.
We are all different Silkman and have different opinions, however at the end of the day that’s all they are opinions.
In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

I just put what 'Life of Brian' is about. Nothing more. It's basically about the ridiculousness of religion. What did I put that was 'anti-yank'? I put nothing about the USA. I do post about Forest, but it doesn't always get put on. What does 'I believe in Jesus' even mean? Did you know him personally?

I'm 95% certain he was a real person like Buddha and Muhammed amongst many others. But supernatural entities are for the birds. I didn't write the film I just know what it's about after watching it so many times. I just put what the film is about.
I wasn't having a go at anyone or any religion. It was Bowie that mentioned the film not me. I just got a torrent of abuse for stating a fact and it was a reaction that you would expect from a child.

Mrs Legolas staying away atm, so I've just watched one of my favourite films - Platoon. This quote from the film sums things up I think:
'Keep your pecker hard and your powder dry, and your world will turn'.
Agree2
28 Jan 2026 11:37:56
It’s a great film Lego. Oliver Stone “amended” those lines from Oliver Cromwell’s famous ( and much more practical when going into battle) advice to his Roundheads to “ Fear God and keep your powder dry”.
Cromwell is one of all time heroes.
On Saturday we took my Grandson to a re enactment of the 1644 Battle of Nantwich by the Sealed Knot. Great fun. Cromwell wasn’t present at the original skirmish ( but Ireton and Fairfax were).
Agree1
28 Jan 2026 18:15:13
Didn't Cromwell's army massacre thousands of Irish and, in effect, conduct ethnic cleansing? Not a 'loaded' question Stokey - but I know you've studied this stuff and I'd appreciate your take on it. (I don't need an essay though mate! ).
Agree0
{Ed001's Note - yes Lego they did. The Irish hate Cromwell.}
28 Jan 2026 19:03:00
Hey lego, during the civil have you heard of the Battle of Lostwithiel that took place in and around Restormal Castle? Its actually fascinating, Google it if you haven't it's well worth a read. 🌳.
Agree1
28 Jan 2026 19:51:03
Yes Ed and Lego he did but as a Puritan and he no regard for Papists and thought of the Irish as spawn of the devil. However, neither side took any prisoners and the feeling was mutual. In pitched battles in Ireland he never lost one. Plus the Catholics weren’t entirely averse to a massacre of Protestant settlers either.
Cromwell was not only a great military commander but a massive influence on the eventual development of the Parliamentary democracy we enjoy today with the Monarchy in Parliament.
Bearing in mind Cromwells time was 400 years ago, his ideas were truly revolutionary and its effects to this day out of all proportion to his few years as Protector of the English Republic.
Have a read of “The Putney Debates”, truly incredible.
I’ve visited the Church in Putney, Cromwells house by Ely Cathedral and the battlefields at Naseby, Edgehill and Marston Moor.
Cromwell is certainly a controversial figure ( my Mums side of the family are Irish Catholics). Have a listen to Morrisey’s great song “ Irish blood, English heart “ to hear what I mean.

Colonel Thomas Rainsford leader of the “Levellers” faction, Putney Debates 1847 presided over by Oliver Cromwell….
“For really I think that the poorest hee that is in Rngland hath a life to live, as the greatest hee; and therefore truly Sir, I think itt clear, that every Man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own Consent to put himself under that Government; and I do think that the poorest man in England is not at all bound in a strict sense to that Government that he hath not had a voice to put Himself under”
So, one man one vote, freedom of conscience and equality under the law 400 years ago…Just unbelievable isn’t it?
“Irish blood, English heart is what I’m made of
There is no one on Earth I’m afraid of
And no regime can buy or sell me
And I will die with both of my hands untied “
Morrisey.

Stokey - I suppose my initial thoughts, without researching the history of the 1600's and hopefully not sounding too deep, is that I guess 'ethnic cleansing' has gone on throughout human history going right back to the days of the Homo Sapiens vs the Neanderthals. OK, the term was first coined in Bosnia when I was there. But, perhaps, 'ethnic cleansing', whilst horrible, is a human character-trait that has gone on since us humans emerged?
Anyway, I'll shut up now as Mrs L is now back home and I better show her some attention!

Winter - regarding the Battle of Lostwithiel, it really was fascinating reading when I researched it. In Army speak - 'knowing the ground' myself after walking around the areas described, I think that the Royalists did a 'job' on the Cavaliers. Also, and this rings true throughout the history of armed conflict to this day - never divide your forces.
Stokey - it's not very often I disagree with you mate. However, after researching Cromwell I've come to the conclusion that he was a right s***. Yes, he left a lasting legacy which was very good for England, but at such an expense of both English and Irish lives. I know he's your hero, but the Int Corps in me tends to think that he was a hyper-religious nutter. I saw the work of planty of those types in Bosnia.

I love anything by Chopin Carlo, my friend. The Minute Walz was the opening signature piece to the brilliant Radio 4 show “Just a Minute” ( where the teams had to speak for a minute on a given topic without hesitation, digression or repetition). Just superb entertainment …
The Preludes are probably my favourite. I’m reminded of the TS Eliot’s lines from “Portrait of a Lady…
“We have been, let us say, to hear the latest Pole
Transmit the Preludes, through his hair and fingertips.
“So intimate, this Chopin, that I think his soul
Should be resurrected only among friends
Some two or three, who will not touch the bloom
That is rubbed and questioned in the concert room”….

I maybe upset a few people on this site regarding the comments I made about Bowie.
I hadn’t seen the posts he had made previously on this page and his recognitions of his drinking and what problems it can cause.
I am so glad he had already recognised what was going on.
The only reason I mentioned it is because I know the signs and have been down and maybe still going down that road, it is a constant battle.
So basically I just want to say not that it means much however, a big congratulations to Bowie and keep fighting.

I've been biting my tongue on the subject so far Reds. However, I wonder how fellow-Veterans on here, such as Stevie and Keeff, feel about Trump's recent comments about the British Armed Forces? Personally, his comments turned my stomach and reinforced my views that the guy is at best an idiot, and at worst a deluded twisted man with serious mental health issues.
So, he has now 'walked back' on his comments, as the coward that he is when faced with anyone standing up to him. So what? It's like a bloke saying to a woman on a first date "Good God, you're ugly" - and then, following the subsequent slap in the face, saying "I didn't mean it baby, I actually think you're beautiful". It doesn't wash, does it?
I'm tired of Trump's ignorance and arrogance. I'm also personally hurt by his derogatory comments about the British Armed forces efforts in Afghan. I'd love to get the guy by the collar, drag him through a muddy field, and then give him a taste of retribution via my metal legs. Oh, and then take him to all of the loved ones of the 457 British service men and women who died in Afghan and beg for their forgiveness.
Agree4
24 Jan 2026 20:56:57
It wasn’t about the British Forces, more about the rest of NATO countries that sign up but don’t allow their troops on the front line.
Trump loves the British a damn sight more than that snake Starmer who is forcing through laws against veterans.
Just to add Trump hates the Globalist none elected Billionaires as he showed at Davos.
Don’t fall for the left rhetoric.

This is a very emotive subject and I can’t possibly begin to image how you and fellow amputees feel about your situations.

We're both in a good mood following the win today Pineapple. So, I'm not going to make a 'scene'.
To explain, it was the last line of your post that riled me. I felt that one sentence crossed the line - certainly with me anyway. I am extremely proud and defensive of the memories of my fellow-soldiers who fell over there. The subject runs deep within me. I don't care about 'political rhetoric' theories - all I care about is the 457 who fell in Afghan, their loved ones, and the hundreds of other soldiers who returned home disabled for life. I hope that you can relate to that to a degree.
Anyway, well done Forest for the much-needed 3 points!

I too was 60's born Bowie. I do love the old films from the 50s/ 60s. However, partly to wind you up and partly to state a fact - it has now been one month since the US DoJ became legally obliged to hand over all of the Epstein files and for a list of the redacted files/ reasons why to be published.
One month later - a small proportion of the files released and many heavily-redacted.
I'm certainly not yawning whilst writing this and nor should others be reading it. I think it's a total affront to the essence of democracy and, frankly, the burial of truth and transparency. Spot the difference between Trump and Putin? I'm struggling.

The population will have doubled by then as well.

No I won't be retiring at 67 my missus will be. I'm planning to retire at 55-60 years old. Our house will be paid for in 10 years when I'm 49 and I'll have my mum's house and my dad's house and whatever money they've got left when they both pass away. Hopefully that's not for a few years yet though.

I can just imagine you silkman sat down in a morning with your bowl of alphabet cereals
Watching the news and plastering the tv with them at the first sign of trump
Then the missus putting an arm around you and saying "calm down, you can go to the pub soon and make some difficult decisions, I've made you your special treat in your packed lunch, dairylea triangles and triangle bread and a pack of monster munch and a fruit shoot 🤣🤣🤣.

How did you know? You're pretty much right there except for the alphabet cereals and dairylea triangles. URGH! Corn Flakes and cheese straws preferably. Please missus. Got to be pickled onion monster munch and a blackcurrant fruit shoot, though. 🤣🤣🤣
Not difficult decisions really. Just confirming stock orders and logistical issues on transport of goods in and out. General inventory decisions. Delegating certain tasks to whoever I think will be the better man or woman for the job in question. Anything goes wrong based on the decisions I've made will result in a backside kicking for myself. When it goes right then we've all done a good job and everyone's happy.

Sounds as boring as you Milkworm, how about finding something you love doing and getting payed for it, no pressure, no targets and no ass kicking. I get paid very well and don't overly work hours wise, usually 30-50 hours a week in the fresh clean air. No mortgages, no debts. Oh and the Mrs takes home a nice chunk of cash too. 🌳.

I enjoy the pressure Robin. If I was to count the hours that I actually do anything then it would be minimal. Decisions don't usually take much longer than 10 minutes and some days there is not many to make anyway. Pinching money in some respects. Easy peasy.

Absolutely not. I get up whatever time I like as I work from home (in the 'pub' on my back yard to be more specific) and do whatever hours I want to, Bowie. Whilst playing pool and maybe throw some darts. And I get paid £42, 000 a year for doing it. But thank you for your concern on my working life. It's very much appreciated.
