In this seemingly interminable lull in the action, I've been looking at a couple of statements from NASA and other scientists which made me realise that, should be ever be tempted to get too big for our boots on here ( and I include myself in this) we should recognise how insignificant we are in the Universe and how exaggerated are the importance of our lives and opinions in the unimaginable vast scheme of things.

Voyager 1 ( the space probe famously containing a golden disc with music ranging from Mozart to Chuck Berry, the sound of a human baby crying, whales communicating, waves breaking on a shore and greetings in 55 different languages. Also, a helpful cosmic map showing where we are) was launched in September 1977 and is still travelling as we speak at 38,000 mph.

Bearing in mind that light travels at 186,000 miles per SECOND, on November 17th ( at around 2. 10am Florida time) it will have achieved one light DAY in distance from the Earth. Radio signals take 24 hours each way to reach Earth. Voyager 1 will lose contact entirely in 2036 but will keep travelling forever.

The nearest star ( apart from our Sun) is 4 and a half light years away. So even travelling at 186,000 miles per second, it would take that amount of time to reach it.

The Andromeda Galaxy is travelling towards ours ( the Milky Way) and in 4 billion years time will merge. The night sky will contain around 3 times more stars than now and our well known constellations will change shape entirely into new ones. It will be quite a sight but no human eye will see it.

Anyway, take care folks and have a good day ??.

Stokey, In 1990 as Voyager was leaving our solar system and the camera being switched off, it turned and took a photos called " The Pale Blue Dot", it was Earth surrounded in darkness, at that time it should have been a wake up call for how fragile our existence is.

06 Oct 2026 16:55:48
I remember that iconic photo very well Mossy. I couldn't ( and still can't) get my head round all that suffering and conflict, yet beauty and wisdom in one small world mate.
I felt the same on an Emirates flight to visit my stepson who was working in Dubai around 10 years ago. The inflight map of our route showed us, unbelievably, flying directly over Irbil in Kurdistan Iraq where, 30, 000 feet beneath our feet, surrounded by luxury, people were killing each other in their thousands.

Two worlds eh?
On a lighter note, the original piece of classical music on Voyager 1's golden disc was going to be JS Bachs " Goldberg Variations”. It's such a mathematically perfect and beautiful piece of music that Carl Sagan the Harvard astromer working with NASA on the Voyager project vetoed it on the grounds that aliens would think we were just showing off. He went with Chuck Berry and a 3 minute aria from Mozarts " Magic Flute”.?.

06 Oct 2026 19:36:12
"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away."?.

06 Oct 2026 22:57:18
My all time piece of classical music is (trois gymnopodies) by Eric sate. Plz give it a whirl. Fell upon it accidentally by one of Gary numans b sides I think it was. Beautiful relaxing piece of work. ?.

07 Oct 2026 09:50:06
London Symphony Orchestra, composed by John Williams, the iconic songs from Star Wars, have it saved on Spotify, beautiful, powerful and addictive. ?.

07 Oct 2026 10:45:01
Very familiar with that piece Bowie, my first wife was a very good pianist and played Eric Satie often. My daughter could never pronounce the name of that tune so she called it " the Chiropody music” and it's known as that to this day.?.

07 Oct 2026 17:28:30
John Williams very moving music from ". Schindlers List” does it for mate. Heartbreaking and beautiful.
One of my favourite film themes is Michael Kamens wonderful score from " Band of Brothers”.
Bowie, for relaxing music I love Beethovens 6th Symphony the Pastoral. It's got a wonderful sense of humour and humanity to it as well, as when he speeds up the peasants dancing music as the thunderstorm approaches and they dash for shelter.

Vaughn Williams " Lark Ascending " is a perfect evocation of a hot summers day in England. only an Englishman could have written it.
Beethovens " Moonlight Sonata' and the second movement of the Emperor Piano. Concerto takes all your troubles away mate.

07 Oct 2026 17:49:11
RRH
John Williams Star Wars theme is certainly stirring stuff mate ?.

08 Oct 2026 17:59:01
Duel of Fates, my favourite??.

Well the proposed new footbridge has miraculously grown into a new tram and footbridge with a tram station at the end. So who's going to foot the bill? And why wasn't it discussed at the planning meeting, seems to me that Rushcliffe council are using Forest to pay for all their projects at little or no cost to them.

Mr M should tell them to stick it and not be held to ransom by one of the richest councils in the country. end of the day it would be cheaper and make more economical sense to build away from them.

Give him his due, he's a great orator. ?.

29 Sep 2026 20:09:40
Mind you, so was that little German fella with the dodgy tash. ?.

30 Sep 2026 15:18:08
I've seen alot of footage of Adolf RRH and have always failed to see the much vaunted oratory skills. Too hysterical and ranting, the very opposite of Churchillian who spoke with restraint and dignity. He never raised his voice either, just under stated firm certainty.

Unlike Hitler, great comic timing and good humour.
Have a look at his speech to the Canadian Parliament regarding Goebbels claim that Germany would " wring that chickens neck” in reference to GB.
" Well, here we are several years later.
Some chicken.some neck.”
Just brilliant.

02 Oct 2026 01:08:59
Gobbells done all of hitlers talking stokey. or however he's spelt.

02 Oct 2026 18:53:55
Just because you didn't rate him, doesn't mean his words weren't able to rally an entire country behind him and his values(by the way I'm not endorsing the Austrian tanker in any shape or form). ?.

03 Oct 2026 17:40:21
Always a strange one to me winter ? they put full on luftwaffe planes against us. Battle of Britain absolutely unbelievable heroism and never for me to be found again. Reason. Hitler had no doubt we'd blow their navy outta the park. What happens now ? Dinghys swarm us bud.

03 Oct 2026 19:18:21
Barbed wire, thats as simple as the solution is.? ? ?.

05 Oct 2026 10:57:34
RRH Hitler was undoubtedly charismatic. I recently read "!Travellers in the Third Reich” by Julia Boyd, a brilliant book about tourists in Germany between the Wars ( people forget that Germany was basically undamaged during WW1 as the fighting and destruction was mainly in France and Belgium). Apart from starvation caused by the British Naval blockade which went a long way to their defeat.
One of the accounts was by a Bournemouth GP, his wife and 3 or 4 daughters who took a walking holiday on the beautiful Bavarian Alps, Up in the hills they met Adolf Hitler, walking with a friend, no security etc.

He was warm and friendly and posed for what we would today call a selfie with the Doctors family. The photo is re produced in the book and later framed in the Surgery Waiting Room until our country was at War when the local Bobby popped in and advised him to remove it, which he did.
There are loads of accounts of what a personable and appealing man he was from everyone from Lloyd George and the Mitford right through to ordinary tourists.
He was, certainly initially, the velvet glove but behind him was the Iron Fist of the SA ( later the SS), with the Holocaust just around the corner.

05 Oct 2026 11:17:08
Bowie, it was the other way round mate. German Blitzkreig tactics ( incidentally first thought of by Captain Liddell Hart, a Brit but ignored by the British) needed control of the air to fend off the all powerful Royal Navy for long enough to float an Army across the Channel then supply it. Much like D Day in reverse. The German Navy ( apart from subs) was tiny. One small Aircraft Carrier (which never left port ) and a few pocket battleships used as raiders on British merchant ships). You can't transport an army in submarines.
We won the Battle of Britain by superb organisation, the invention of radar and the build up of key aircraft such as the Hurricanes ( and far superior but far fewer in number ) the Spitfire. Like the Harrier jump jets in the Falklands ( developed at Hucknall) a war winner against superior numbers.

Plus the rescue services of downed pilots ( Includibg Germans ) by the coastguard and RNLI
Our pilots to fight again. Theirs to captivity:
As for the dinghy's, unlike in War, you can't kill people on the high seas. It's murder.
I'm thinking the solution is converted ex RAF and military camps pending repatriation. So barbed wire as you say RRH. Humane conditions. But bear in mind, migrants commit an offence under the Immigration Act 1971 as amended straight away, as soon as they are landed. Carries 10 years so stops the clock ticking and the Human Rights complications.
As the issue is going to be the next General Election decider it's odd that all options aren't being considered.

17 Sep 2026 19:32:43
Shows how much attention I pay to it Mossy. Still, good fun to guess the female impersonators on here. ???
All for equal opportunities, but I think they should give Danny La Rue and Lilly Savage a clear run.????.

18 Sep 2026 05:07:34
Stokey, How some posters on here can tell you a mistake you made two years ago in a post, and keep reminding you of it verbatim, not sure about a female impersonator, it's more like a argument with the wife?.

18 Sep 2026 11:22:52
