Thought for today.
Is it unrealistic for Sunak to expect teenagers to do one years National Service when he couldn't manage a whole day of it? ???.

Agree4 Disagree0

Probably thought it was to near Dunkirk and had to get off the beach smartish. My, he makes some poor decisions the best one he could make is go to the US.

07 Jun 2024 19:28:03
Thought for the day, if politicians could only implement policies involving only things they’d participated in themselves, nobody would be in a position to stand for parliament, anyway national service is a bad idea, the forces need quality recruits, not reluctant participants,

07 Jun 2024 19:56:58
That is a point to ponder Stokey! Personally, irrespective of Sunak, I feel that National Service should never have been abolished in the first place.
PS get back to your holiday mate!

07 Jun 2024 20:04:28
They'll do what they like. until they are kicked out!

07 Jun 2024 20:22:29
Brilliant stokey, I'm f kn livid about it. Hang your head you mug. Totally opened the door to labour. I'm not getting into politics. But bye if this government is that thick not to see how wrong it was. What chance have we got.

He thinks he can get away with it with an apology. I swear. Shows he had no clue on what them fine men/ women and even animals give to the great cause of this country. Just sick of it all.

07 Jun 2024 20:37:18
Yes the only people who want that or think it's a good idea as usual are people it won't affect. I went with Grenadier guards cadets a few times in the Sixties and that was enough for me to go down the pit instead.

07 Jun 2024 21:27:50
Sunak hasn't done national service
What does he think bringing it back will do?
He's got no chance saying that or getting it through parliament
For starters our armed forces have diminished to record levels, so let's say the majority enjoy it and want to sign up?
What then?
Stupid idea full stop and we live in a democracy not a fascist state
He's blown it with that comment alone.

07 Jun 2024 21:28:06
There should be a dad's army put the pensioners in for national service when they reach 67 ?.

07 Jun 2024 22:27:07
You keep lighting up and you won't need to worry about 67 skeggsjay.

07 Jun 2024 22:30:58
Better still put them to sleep, financial crisis solved. NHS saved.
Old politicians first, men70 + ruling the world, most of them senile.
CARLO.

07 Jun 2024 23:22:01

08 Jun 2024 07:45:35
Wouldn’t take much to put me to sleep Carlo! I nod off quite easily these days ( and it seems I can put you lot to sleep with my posts alone! ) ??.

08 Jun 2024 08:44:24
Skeggs;I watched a good friend of mine die a slow and horrible death due to lung cancer through smoking. his family are lost without him.

From a 67 year old Stella I’m reminded of the occasion when a middle aged German teacher stayed with me and my first wife on an exchange. By fluke we watched a bit of TV for the News and caught the tail end of an episode of Dads Army. Our friend was bemused that it was so popular in the UK as the German equivalent the “Volksturm” had actually had to confront the Allies and Russian during the War with terrible and sad consequences. Historical events make it superb comedy for us Brits and supreme tragedy for our German friends……
I think of it every time I hear the Al Stewart song “Roads to Moscow “ which I commend to you. ???.

08 Jun 2024 09:33:02
Yes rogie watched my grandad and aunt die of it to but it's the only thing I enjoy so it will be what will be.

08 Jun 2024 10:05:18
I hear what you're saying Stevie - and as a fellow Veteran I respect your viewpoint. However, the uncomfortable truth is that if the UK went to war tomorrow with Russia (or even in 5 years time as many predict), we would not have the manpower, equipment nor ammunition to last longer than a month.

Do your own research - even our most senior officers/ ex-officers are saying that. We need to ramp-up our forces in all these regards. Reluctant recruits? They will become less reluctant when the rounds are spinning around their heads and they need to preserve their own lives.

08 Jun 2024 22:04:24
Legless the Russians have been trying to get to Kiev for 2 years and can’t, and that’s in their own backyard, the poles have beefed up their forces, and the Russians would need to get past them 1st, senior officers are always moaning for more resources mate, that’s their job,

09 Jun 2024 07:59:33
Plus Putin has now got formerly neutral countries like Finland and Sweden into NATO. As for running down the Armed Forces politicians of all party’s are just incredibly stupid and keep wilfully ignoring the lessons of history. The “few” who won the Battle of Britain against all the odds were “few” because pre war politicians cut Armed Forces spending. Only Churchill, in the wilderness, saw the danger and campaigned for re armament.
