To all the people giving Awoniyi stick don't forget it took Teddy Sheringham a while to get going back in '91. His first goal was a tap in at Meadow Lane and took him til late September to score a league goal at home. He ended up with 20 that season so keep the faith.

Irrespective of how Ojeda and Ioannou played, they didn’t get into our championship side so how will they contribute to a premiership side? Our problem is can we sign the equivalent of Spence, Garner, Zinc and Davies . So far it appears not too.

What are friendlies for? Surely you choose to face weak opposition ie the likes Coventry, Burton, Barnsley and Notts County so that yes try things out but get a moral boosting win. Coventry are a bang average championship side and we lost 3:1. Can anyone recall when we last lost by that number? It was certainly in Chris Houghtons time and SL? Can you remember those preseason results? As for getting to know his players, SC has been picked his match squad from those training the week before so he knows their abilities or lack of them . There are those on this site that will accuse me of negativity after one match and that is fair . However Newcastle is 4 weeks away! We do not want our club to go into reverse . My long term worry is players who are rated in Europe but flop in the English system . Surely it is not too much to expect a 17 M striker to go close at least . I hope and expect more players . I have yet to be convinced by who we have brought in to date . We all agreed that the successful championship side was based on a great team spirit, consistent picking of the same players each week, knowing their place was theirs to loose . SC is a class manager but my fear is his hands are tied when it comes to who is brought in. Prove me wrong and I will eat my proverbial hat . We have been stung so many times before with European imports and in fact I cannot think of one more successful than Zinc who could hold down their place week after week, and he was a loan and is going to Olympiacos.
{Ed001's Note - pre-season friendlies are picked for a number of reasons, morale-boosts are certainly not in the thinking at this point of the window. They are purely about fitness, making money and/or trying out new players/tactics/formations at this stage. Not one care is given to results right now and morale is not effected by games like this as players are too busy being hammered by the training and feeling tired to notice anything else.}

Doc, there was a time when I’d have agreed with you on who’s deciding the signings and I still think it wasn’t the coach for a while .
Zink was inconsistent in my opinion and English clubs want ludicrous money for unproven players like Davies who hasn’t played in bay too flight .
I think we are taking the best approach available to us, if it doesn’t work we don’t stay up .

lol Doc, we bossed the first half till we changed the whole team at half time, it's a friendly to try and test things. If we won 3-1 it really wouldn't mean much either. Ed's right.
I guess just seeing who can step up etc and get a good look at people in a competitive environment.

I think a bit of perspective is needed Ginger, we were no where near contenders and went up out of the blue, if we don’t stay up so be it, it’s not the end of the world in my opinion . I think the back where we belong is a distraction, no one belongs anywhere they haven’t been for 23 years and it may take a while to establish a few consecutive seasons in there, I’m more than happy with the current situation as I’ve said many times competing in and around the championship top 6 is my bar. I must admit though I do get very irrational if we get anywhere close to championship relegation fodder ??.

Ed I don’t think there is ever a friendly in any sport . Sport is by nature competitive . So vs Coventry, there are a significant number of those players who needed to impress their manager as well as the dedicated supporters there . Of course the result is irrelevant but if I were a player or the manager or a supporter I would be very disappointed . A 0 0 would have told us the defence is ok a 3:1 defeat tells us our defence was poor and we couldn’t score . What was the point of taking players to Spain with associated costs who are not going to be in the squad? I won’t post again until we complete our pre season.
