Just to keep things in perspective, today is the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. On this date, in one day, the British Army suffered over 57, 000 casualties, of which 19, 250 were killed.

It remains the largest loss of life suffered in one day.
The battle dragged on for another 8 months with around a million casualties on both sides for little or no gain
RIP.

Well said, Stokey. Hero's one and all. 🌳

02 Jul 2026 10:20:08
Largest loss of life in one day by the British Army .

A monument to the stupidity of the British Officer class.

2

02 Jul 2026 21:51:43
Could not agree more cyclist

2

02 Jul 2026 21:52:09
Yes and no Cyclist. Certainly to the stupidity of the Senior Command Officers at General Staff Level on all sides. They'd started to learn the lessons by the last year of the War by which time it was too late for millions. So, use of tanks, aircraft, mobile storm troopers, creeping barrages, no massed frontal attacks etc
The Junior Officers below the General Staff level, say Lieutenants, Captains, platoon and section commanders were disproportionately targeted and killed in huge numbers.

They led from the front and were ( until later in the war) dressed and armed differently and killed by snipers and small arms fire.
The flower of the British Officer class were lost, particularly in Battles like the Somme a mainly British attack and a particular symbol of pointless tragedy

2

03 Jul 2026 08:59:04
The officers tactics/orders have nothing to do with the memory of the fallen. Its the fallen we remember, brave souls who stood for our country and ideals. The same country that many here are happy to slag off. Clearly easy to forget its our parents, grandparents and great grandparents who stood and fought so bravely to defend those ideals. 🌳

3

03 Jul 2026 11:12:15
I agree entirely, Rrh. Good post. A tragedy of unimaginable proportions.

2

03 Jul 2026 14:08:17
Yes, all them millions of soldiers that gave their lives for the country to be given away a hundred years later. They would be so proud. Like I said, England is no more. Finished.

Rubbish Skegs. Our country has many faults but it's still one of life's golden winning lottery numbers to be born here.
If you are dissatisfied, like I said, you should either get your arse off your recliner and do something ( even in a small way) to improve things as per Lego's efforts with his veterans or bugger off abroad somewhere.

Every day, I wake up and thank God I'm English and live here for all its faults. And I've seen a lot of the World, believe me

4

04 Jul 2026 16:37:04
Maybe, if you got your head out of the books and didn't spend so much time travelling around the world and leaving this country, you might see what's happening with it. But you sit there with your sherry and your little pinky in the air. Why I go back to living in the real world.

1

10 Jun 2026 10:46:54
Yeah, it's a 7 part series, not as good as the film, but definitely worth a watch. Yahya Abdul-Mateen plays the part of Creasy well. He's also the spitting image of Spurs' Kevin Danso, build, beard, the lot. 🌳

Had to check, yeah that's the guy. First time I've watched something with him, to my knowledge. Was impressed by him; could easily take over the mantle from Denzel in the coming years. 🌳

That 'The Smashing Machine' is well worth a watch. Johnson is superb in it. 🌳

Though it might just have been that the advert looked good as it was different from the usual ones I get on there offering me English lessons! I don't know if youtube is trying to tell me something with all those ads.}

Its entertaining, not the best but very watchable. i'm waiting for 'Bloodaxe', from the creators of 'Vikings' which by the way, is the greatest TV show that has ever been made imo. 'Vikings Valhalla' isn't bad either. 🌳

0

https://liverpool-rumours.co.uk/uploads/thumb_Ed001.png avatar{Ed001's Note - I wasn't all that impressed with that either, watchable but nothing special. I find it annoying when they change historical facts.}

Nah, the blood-thirsty shield-maidens do it for me. 🀣 Especially Katheryn Winnick. 🌳

My wife and I are reading "Thomas and the Tinners" to our 5 year old grandson Lego. He loves it, especially the bit about the tiny "Fairy Miners" eating his Cornish pasties. When Thomas is hungry he says he is "fair kine". I'm sure Mrs Lego will be familiar with the story, mate...

Great book for the youngsters, Stokey.

Winter - I have a little confession to make. When I was in my late teens/early 20's I used to swim out and rob the lobster pots at low tide in Looe.

They were still around 6-8 foot deep even at low tide. I would swim back to the shore one-handed, holding an angry lobster in my other hand whilst it was trying to take my fingers off. Happy days!

2

02 Jun 2026 00:45:34
Lego, don't admit things like that even here🀣, you'd end up being pot bait if a proper fisherman hears. Shhhh nothing wrong with abit of poaching.🀫🌳

3

02 Jun 2026 15:00:30
Lego and RRH, there's a very interesting article on the BBC about how Cornish miners introduced football (and cricket) to Mexico in Victorian times. It's a great read. πŸ‘

Check out this article Lego and anyone else who's interested.

How Cornish Miners took football to Mexico. 🌳

That's a great read - thanks, lads.

Chilli in a pasty, though?! Mrs Legolas wouldn't be very happy with that.

1

02 Jun 2026 18:09:13
Haha, Stokey was faster on the finger. Lego, I have a confession to make, at Christmas, Turkey and Cranberry pasties from Rowes are amazing. Also, Party Presto make a Bacon, Leek and Cheese pasty to die for. πŸ§€πŸ₯“πŸ€€

I used to like you, Winter.

Usyk.

Nearly went from hero to Zero.

If I was a cynic you would think the whole thing was stage managed.

If not. What was going through the refs mind.

Hang em up mate. Don't spoil your legacy.

This has been brooding within me for months.

For DTP - no-one else seems to have the guts to say it, but I will. Frankly, I don't care how long you have been on this site. However, all you do is spread poison via your personal, snide rebukes on this forum. I don't care what is going on in your life, but your sharp tongue to others on here has now become untenable for me.

3

22 May 2026 23:33:26
Bye bye.

3

23 May 2026 23:29:04
Bye then.

5

24 May 2026 01:26:26
DTP, going to have to send you on a How to Win Friends and Influence People course.

Legolas, you are clearly a good guy who has been there and done it.

Carry on posting, mate.

This site is not a mutual backslapping one.

Now, that would be boring.

5

24 May 2026 10:05:18
Legolas, as you know, I'm always on your side, mate, rather than that of the Orcs ...
Good luck to you and come back as soon as you feel able to ...

24 May 2026 12:44:43
Hence, the problems with cliques through meet ups.
I just say what I believe regardless.

I don't think meet ups are the problem, Dtp. πŸ™„

25 May 2026 12:18:00
Hey Lego mate, don't disappear from the site, your posts have always brought a smile to my face. Take no notice of the poison excreted by certain people here, just remember to never lick a toad and you'll be fine. 🌳

I once knew a guy who p****d up, befriended a toad, and took the little fella to the pub. He allowed said toad to rest in his pint. On the dukebox came Ozzy and inspiration, and the toad loses its head. The p****d up guy spent a night in A&E with a swollen tongue and airways. 🀣🐸🌳

Nothing you can put to me bothers me, Winter.
It bothers you, though, when you get it back.
Same happened with Skeggs the other week, and you were off on one again. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ»

1

29 May 2026 19:40:49
Doesn't bother me either Sir Richard Head(apart from when you slander a person with false accusations)and Skegs always seem to out wit you as i do. I suppose pork canny be educated.πŸ™„πŸŒ³

2

29 May 2026 20:01:13
You only win battles in that tiny wee brain of yours, all you actually do is make yourself look a fool. Skegs by the way out witted you with little effort.
Winters marking score for you: 2/10 (must try harder or grow a personality) 🌳

Anyone taking it for granted needs to give their head a wobble. Funny old game.

3

02 May 2026 19:11:50
You can take it for granted now after Brentford's demolition job of West Ham. 🀣🀣

1

03 May 2026 19:48:32
How about Spurs beating Villa, the curse of DTP. 🀣🀣🀣

1

04 May 2026 21:10:08
And who was right?

1

05 May 2026 12:22:26
Well, nobody yet, Skegs and DTP, not mathematically anyway.
I was right, so far from months ago, if you check back that we would finish comfortably mid table. We are currently only 3 or 4 points off with 3 to play, mate...

2

05 May 2026 19:33:55
But you said that when Dyche was in charge, Stokey. If we had stuck with him we'd be down now. 🀣🀣 And DTP, like I said before, sooner or later, out of the many wrong predictions you've given, you would have to get one right. 🀣🀣🀣 At least it was a good one.

1

05 May 2026 20:52:24
We've had this discussion before Skegs, mate! To summarise, SD got 22 points from his 18 games in charge. Who knows, but the stats extrapolated say otherwise, don't they, my friend? He, at the very least, gave VP a platform after Ange?

0

06 May 2026 19:46:46
Dychegate, Nunogate, Mystic Meg gate. 🀣 🌳

1

06 May 2026 21:52:29
Think it is fair to say, if we had stuck with Dyche, we would have gone down. Most seasons, it would have been different.

We have won 4 of our last 5 league games. We are unbeaten in 10.

Yet, still not mathematically safe. Spurs, WHU, and us have won 8 out of the last 9 games between them. The Brentford game was the odd one out.

Appointing VP was a masterstroke.

2

07 May 2026 10:58:09
Who knows Forest? None of us can see into the future. Dyche on 22 points from 18 games could have become 44 from 36, similar to what we are now?
But, what's past is past. In VP we trust and he's doing a great job. πŸ‘ πŸ‘

1

07 May 2026 11:17:06
Stokey, how many times have you repeated that stat about Cretaceous Dyche? No need, mate, past is past, as you say. After Sunday we could be safe and in a European Cup final. Long may VP reign. COYR. ⭐ 🌳 ⭐

0

07 May 2026 11:48:02
Since VP came in, we are the highest-scoring team in the Premier. From 2nd lowest.

I hope one of Dyche's errors doesn't cost us tonight. Not one recognised left-back in the Europa squad. Netz should have been in.

2

07 May 2026 13:55:36
RRH, I've repeated that stat as many times as Dyche's name has come up with a derogatory remark attached to it. You can have opinions and speculate, but facts are facts. I'm very happy to move on and appreciate the brilliant job VP is doing, mate!

1

07 May 2026 14:26:17
Haha, I couldn't help adding Cretaceous because I know it gets on your wick. Cretaceous belongs in the past, as you have said (much like someone's agricultural approach to football tactics). 🀭. Anyways, let's move on to tonight and a victorious performance from the lads under the tutorage of a proper coach. ⭐ 🌳 ⭐

1

07 May 2026 14:05:37
You definitely haven't moved on stokie. Maybe you need to see someone about it dyche was crap and thank God he's long gone nobody will ever remember him as a forest manager that's for sure uredddssss uredddssss

Live bait definitely works better than a lure imo. 🎣 🎣 🦈 🌳

1

07 May 2026 17:22:14
Skegs certainly has no "allure" for me, RRH! 😁😁

2

07 May 2026 17:27:26
Very good mate. 🀣🌳

2

07 May 2026 17:55:56
Keep bowling those pies, Skegs, and I'll keep smashing them for 6! 😁😁😁
Don't know about you, but nerves are kicking in already. It's like waiting outside the Crown Court. πŸ˜…

1

07 May 2026 18:21:13
I know what you mean, Stokey. Doubt you were in the dock though. 🀣🌳

1

09 May 2026 01:28:39
To finish the conversation. [hopefully].

I am 90% certain, despite 22 points in 18 games.

If Dyche had remained in charge, we would have gone down. [I know we still might].

As a spectator at the ground, it was one of the worst spectacles since Megson. Bypassing our best players MGW and Anderson with long balls to an isolated Jesus.

Don't get me wrong, great bloke, love Stone n Woan, but it was a reaction to the Ange mistake and was never going to work long term.

No way he could have pulled out the 13 points out of 15 available in the last 5 games, with a plus 13 goal difference, with his approach.
Credit to Mr M for sniffing the danger...
