In this country, if such a tackle is intended, it is a criminal assault; in the case of a broken leg, then GBH. I'm always amazed that there haven't been more arrests for crimes committed in sport. If you saw players fighting and scuffling on the pitch, like at the end of the World Cup final, for example, in this country, Police would be lawfully entitled to arrest for affray. Likewise, if you see someone beating a horse with a stick or whip in the street, it's arrestable. Because it takes place on a football field or a race course, it doesn't happen.


Famously, there was enough evidence to charge Roy Keane for the horror tackle on Alf Inger Harland (even though Harland didn't want to press charges), but the CPS and Police bottled it.
It's purely a matter of Police policy and lack of resources. If someone decided to have a judicial review into the legality of this policy, it would get very interesting. Would it be in the public interest to prosecute? It's only a matter of time before a horse race is stopped and jockeys prosecuted. It's no defence to say that it's justified because of the revenue accrued by the betting industry and taxes going into the public purse.

Andy Burnham has just spoken out against it, saying the Government would oppose any such move by FIFA and is in support of UEFA and the FA. He said football is the people's game and should remain so. Also, that if you sell off a part of it, you sell off all of it.

I make 3 points on football governance .
Firstly, the Government has a 170 plus seat majority so I'm guessing someone, somewhere must have voted for them .

Secondly, it's a potential vote catcher if you're a voter in Bromley, Bolton or Walsall ( or the hundreds of other small towns with a football club) you might like a bit of a financial boost from the Prem for your club?
Thirdly, Vale mate, you can't bemoan the state of football but then oppose change. Or, to put it another way, if things don't change, they'll stay pretty much the same .??????
